“Red in the Face”
with Simon Moya-Smith

From racist Indian mascots to wannabeism to antiquated American holidays that celebrate white invasion and land theft, Indigenous folks face a lot year-round, but it all crescendos every autumn with a cacophony of mawkish Americana.

• Simon Moya-Smith, 43, is an Oglala Lakota and Chicano writer and journalist. He has a Master of Arts in Journalism from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Minor in Ethnic Studies from the University of Colorado Denver. His work appears in The Nation, NBC News, CNN, and New York Magazine among others. Moya-Smith, along with Julie Francella, Ojibwe, host the Indigenous-focused segment, We’re Still Here, on SiriusXM Progress Ch. 127 with comedian John Fugelsang every Thursday at 11 a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST. Moya-Smith’s new book, Your Spirit Animal is a Jackass, is forthcoming. You can follow Moya-Smith on Instagram, Bluesky, and Threads.
