“Walking with Evaristo: Reflections on the Indigenous Mayan Culture in Guatemala”
with Christian Nill
Christian Nill will talk about the plight of the indigenous Mayans of Guatemala, offering a summary of the 400 years prior to Nill’s arrival in Guatemala, which includes mention of the 1954 CIA coup. He will reflect on his years as a Guatemala Peace Corps volunteer during 1979-1981, the word of the Indigenous genocide years, and on his memoir, “Walking With Evaristo”, which retells that experience. Nill will also discuss the 1996 Peace Accords, and political realities since then, and prospects for the future.
• Christian Nill was born, and raised in Central New York. He is an environmental professional who served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala from 1978 to 1982. After his Peace Corps service, he continued working in Guatemala as a project manager with CARE for another five years. He holds a master’s degree in natural resources from Cornell University.
