This service asks us to take a careful look at the nature and state of our “democracy” in the United States. Until recently, many of us, including the speaker, may have taken its security for granted, but now it is clearly in peril and we must ask: how do we respond? I seek the answer through the music of Leonard Cohen, David Mallett, Tommy Sands, and Charlie King along with the words of MLK set to music by Eileen Vance.

• Geoff Kaufman: Songs of the sea, the earth, the heart and spirit: All of these are in Kaufman’s ditty bag. Ballads, work songs, and songs of love; poignant songs of people engaged in life’s struggles, humorous glimpses of human foibles, and insights into history. In 1978, Geoff joined Pete Seeger and the Sloop Singers and sang with them for ten years supporting the work of Clearwater to clean up the Hudson River. Geoff has built a repertoire of environmental and civil rights songs which he shares with young people, old people, people concerned with social justice. He often performs at Unitarian Universalist churches, for and with people championing care of the earth and its varied people.
