There were some 20 of us there on a beautiful summer afternoon. Thanks for the food and joy you all brought.

We have a new staff member. Folks, meet Helen Matthews. We first knew Helen when she was with KidsArts!, the Jamaica Plain after school program in the First Church UU by the Monument. She is long associated with JP oriented non-profits and JP community organizing. City Life-Vida Urbana, and the struggle to keep gentrification/Whole Foods from coming into Hyde Square come to mind. Helen Matthews is also a documentary videographer and has worked in the past as a radio journalist and a vegan baker. Helen holds degrees in Social Movements Studies, Feminist Theory and Philosophy. This top-notch administrator is already whipping us into shape and hurdling us out of the dinosaur age, into this millennium.

Our summer search for a new administrator was tedious and thorough. We have the Personnel Committee to thank (Dian, Lenny, Karla, Dick C. and Dean). Special kudos go to our chair Dian Lerman, who went the extra mile, and produced a marvelous group of applicants. It was a very difficult choice to make. You would not believe the amazing folks we interviewed, and we thank every one of them for inquiring about employment with us.

As we launch into our new season, this is our chance to recognize and shout out to our entire awesome CCB staff:

Xinli, our bookkeeper, pays our bills, keeps eagle-eyed track of our numbers, files our forms, keeps us in reality land.

Luis: keeps our building clean, helps us with the challenges of sharing our space with hoards of wonderful and untidy teenagers (BYOP and BAGLY, Theater Offensive’s Summer Camp, etc.). Prepares our delicious Sunday lunches.

Rodney: Keeps a constant watch on our building, fixes what ails it, responds night and day to what needs to be done, keeps our tenants happy.

Mark: Kept the office functioning this spring and summer while we sought out his permanent replacement. He also oriented Helen in the office workings of CCB. Thank you so much, Mark, and best wishes as you return to UMass this fall!

And now, Helen (known fondly to almost everyone by her nickname, Homefries). Welcome Homefries, to our lifeboat for justice, solidarity, and peace on our planet.

During this exciting upcoming season, I hope each one of you has a chance to personally thank each one of these members of our CCB team, for the essential work they do to keep us walking forward, never turning back!!

-Dean Stevens, Board President

Dear CCB Members and Friends, A long delicious summer separates us from our last gathering. Although we did have a delightful CCB picnic gathering just two weeks ago.
